Surrealism, Fantastic Realism, Visonary Art, The World Of Abdul Mati Klarwien

Abdul Mati Klarwein was born in Germany, 1932 to a Jewish father and non Jewish mother. They fled to Palestine. When things kicked off there, they went to France.

Some say he is a psychedelic painter, but there is more to him than that, "I painted psychedelically before I took psychedelics," he is claimed to have said. I believe him.

Having a rich lover helped him see the world, so he could paint it, they travelled to:

Paris, New York, Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, India, Morocco, Niger, Haiti, Jamaica, Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico, Bahamas, Kenya, Senegal, Gambia, Cuba and Guatemala.

Friends with Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Dali, Ernest Fuchs, amongst many other visonary's of the time... He lived the dream.

These pictures were taken inside the Aleph Sanctuary. The original Aleph Sanctuary was a portable 3 x 3 x 3 metre cubic temple made out of various metals and wood and panelled with 68 original paintings of various sizes. It was built between 1963 and 1970. That chapel was subsequently dismantled to remove the original paintings.
The chapel was rebuilt in 1992 using aluminium diatrans and plexiglass panels lit by rows of fluorescent tubes.

The picture above is one of the best paintings of all time I reckon.

Everything about the painting above is perfect. The scars above the eyebrows are precise, the lumpyness of them accurate, the colour of the skin due to the oil, the expression, the texture of the hair.A magnificent album.

  1. I agree! That Hendrix painting is amazing. :-) I love surrealist art! Not that I know a lot about it.. but i guess it really speaks to the "escapist" inside of me.. not a very big fan of.. reality. hehe.

    :-)
