I am so into Michel Faber. He is skilled, witty, dark and intensely clever. The first book I read was The Crimson Petal and The White, a triumph of Victoriana writing. The main character is a prostitute called Sugar, who has had far from the best, but not the worst childhood. We pick up the story when she is 19. The other characters in the book are engrossing and totally believable. The book is thick, many pages, but as soon as I had finished reading it, I started again. Another gem from Michel is Under the Skin. I have yet to read a book that surprised me so, the twists and real agenda of those in the book is a work of genius I reckon. You think you have it sussed, then wham, the story goes into such disturbing imagery and concepts that I was unable to think about much else.
